Edith (Matilda) of Scotland was a member of the House of Normandy by birth and of the House of Dunkeld through marriage. She was the daughter of King Malcolm III of Scotland and Margaret of Wessex. Her marriage to King Henry I united the Houses of Wessex and Normandy.

Edith (Matilda) of Scotland Short Biography
Edith was born in 1080, the daughter of King Malcolm III and Margaret of Wessex. At the time of her birth there was conflict between England and Scotland and Edith was sent to her aunt Cristina who was a nun at the Abbey of Romsey in England.
In 1093, Edith’s father and her brother Edward were killed at the Battle of Alnwick. Shortly afterwards her mother died followed by her brother Ethelred.
In 1100, King William II of England was killed by an arrow while he was hunting in the New Forest. William’s younger brother, Henry, seized the English throne. Henry was unmarried and decided that Edith, who was descended from the House of Wessex, would be a good match.
Henry married Edith on 11th November 1100 at Westminster Abbey. Edith’s name was changed to the Norman name, Matilda on her marriage. The couple had two children, Adelaide, born in 1102 and William, born in 1103. As ruler of England and Normandy, Henry was often absent in Normandy. During these periods, Edith (Matilda) acted as regent.
In 1110, Edith’s daughter, Adelaide, married Henry V, Holy Roman Emperor. Adelaide’s name was changed to Matilda when she married and for the rest of her life she was known as Empress Matilda.
Edith (Matilda) died on 1st May 1118 and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
