Edward the Exile Short Biography

Edward the Exile Family Tree

Edward the Exile was the son of King Edmund Ironside and Ealdgyth of East Anglia. He was born in 1016. Following his father’s death in late 1016, the throne was taken by King Canute. It was felt that Edward and his brother Edmund’s lives were in danger so they were taken into exile.

They eventually ended up in Hungary where Edward later married Agatha, a Hungarian Princess. Edward and Agatha had three children: Edgar Aetheling, Margaret and Cristina.

Edward the Confessor had become King in 1042, restoring the House of Wessex. He married Edith, daughter of Earl Godwin, but they had not children. By the mid 1050s, Edward was becoming concerned about the succession and sent representatives to the continent to try and find Edward the Exile and bring him back to England. It is believed that Edward the Confessor was thinking of making him heir to the throne.

Edward, his wife and children arrived in England in 1057. However, soon after their arrival Edward was taken ill and died on 19th April 1057. When Edward the Confessor died in January 1066, Edgar Aetheling was considered too young to be King and Harold Godwinson was crowned King instead.
