Short Biography
King Donald III was born around 1033 to King Duncan I and Sybilla of Northumbria. He was known as Donald Bane (meaning fair or white). When his father died his elder brother succeeded as King Malcolm III.
Malcolm III died on 13th November 1093 and Donald seized the throne over Malcolm’s own sons. However in 1094 Malcolm’s son, Duncan managed to overthrow him and take the throne himself as King Duncan II. Duncan ruled for six months before he was killed at the Battle of Monthechin. Donald then re-took the throne and ruled jointly with Duncan’s brother Edmund.
In 1097, Edmund’s brother Edgar overthrew Donald and Edmund and took the throne for himself. Edmund fled to England and sought refuge at Montacute Abby in Somerset. Donald was blinded and imprisoned. He died in prison in 1099.
