William was born on 5th August 1103 and died on 25th November 1120. He was the only legitimate son of Henry I of England and Edith (Matilda) of Scotland. His death, in the White Ship disaster, caused a succession crisis. When King Henry I died, 1st December 1135, they crowned Henry’s nephew, Stephen of Blois, King of England. Matilda rallied troops and a civil war began.
