Short Biography

Eadwig was the son of Aethelred, known as Unready and his wife, Aelfgifu of York. He was designated Aetheling because he was the son of a King. The year of his birth is not known and very few details of his life are recorded.

After his father’s death in 1016, Eadwig’s brother, Edmund Ironside, became King. Edmund was faced with a serious challenge to his throne from the Dane, Canute. When Edmund died in November 1016, Canute took the throne. To secure his place on the throne and eliminate any challengers, Canute ordered that Eadwig be murdered. It is believed that this was carried out in 1017.
