Sweyn Knutsson Short Biography
Sweyn Knutsson, was born in 1015. He was the eldest son of King Canute the Great by his first wife, Aelfgifu of Northampton. His brother Harold Harefoot was born in 1016, the same year that Canute became King of England following the death of King Edmund Ironside.
In 1030 King Olaf II of Norway died and Sweyn and his mother were sent to Norway to rule the country in Canute’s name. Sweyn was proclaimed King of Norway while Aelfgifu acted as regent.
They introduced new laws and increased taxation which made them unpopular with the Norwegians. They were driven out of Norway in 1035 by Magnus, son of King Olaf II who then claimed the Norwegian crown. Sweyn and Aelfgifu went to Denmark where Sweyn died in 1035.
