King William II, Rufus, c1057 – 1100

William II, Rufus

William was the third son of King William I and Matilda of Flanders. He succeeded to the throne of England after his father’s death. William was nicknamed Rufus because he had red hair and a ruddy complexion. He was killed in a hunting accident in 1100. As he was unmarried with no children, the crown passed to his brother Henry.
