Short Biography

Aethelberht was born in the year 836 and died in the Autumn of 865. He was the third son of King Aethelwulf of Wessex and elder brother to King Alfred the Great. His grandfather was King Egbert who had briefly united the kingdoms of England under his rule.

The Vikings had become an increasing problem in the ninth century, repeatedly attacking Wessex along the south coast. After the death of his elder brother Aethelbald he became King and was crowned at Kingston-upon-Thames. He did not marry and did not have children. He was succeeded by his younger brother Aethelred.
