Early Years
King Aethelberht of Wessex was born in the year 836 the third son of King Aethelwulf of Wessex and his wife, Osburgh. He had two younger brothers, Aethelred and Alfred. His grandfather was King Egbert who had briefly united the kingdoms of England under his rule.
In 855, King Aethelwulf and Alfred, went on a pilgrimage to Rome. Aethelberht became Subregulus of Kent and his brother Aethelbald became regent for his absent father.
King Aethelwulf died on 13th January 858 and Aethelbald succeeded as King.
King of Wessex
King Aethelbald died in 860. As he had no children, Aethelberht became King of Wessex.
In 865 the legendary Viking Ragnar Lothbrok landed in Northumbria and was killed by King Aelle of Northumbria. In revenge for the death of Ragnar, his sons formed the Great Heathen Army that landed in East Anglia later the same year.
King Aethelberht of Wessex died in the Autumn of 865. He had not married and did not have children so he was succeeded by his younger brother Aethelred.
