Aethelred of Mercia Short Biography
Aethelred of Mercia is thought to have been born around 860. He became ruler of Mercia following the death of Ceowulf.
Aethelred married Aethelflaed, the eldest daughter of King Alfred the Great in 886 as part of a treaty of mutual support. They had one child, a daughter, Aelfwynn.
Aethelred and his Mercian force, fought alongside Alfred and his son Edward to defeat the repeated Viking challenges during this period. Around 902, Aethelred became ill and his wife Aethelflaed took over the rule of Mercia. He died in 911 and was buried in St Oswald’s Priory, Gloucestershire.
