Short Biography

Aelfhelm of York was the son of Wulfrun, a wealthy noblewoman and landowner. Details of his father are not known. He married a lady by the name of Wulfrune and they had three children. Their daughter, Aelfgifu of Northampton, was the first wife of King Canute the Great and the mother of King Harold I. In 1006 Aelfhelm was murdered and his two sons blinded by Eadric Steona possibly on the order of King Aethelred the Unready, because the family had allied with the Danes.
