Adeleide, Empress Matilda 1102 – 1167

Empress Matilda

Adeleide was born on 7th February 1102 and died on 23rd May 1167. She was the daughter of King Henry I of England and Edith (Matilda) of Scotland. Her name was changed to Matilda when she married Henry V, Emperor of Germany. After the death of her brother, William, she became heir to the throne. When Henry I died, her cousin Stephen seized the throne. This led to a civil war. She married Geoffrey Plantagenet after the death of Henry V and was the mother of King Henry II
