William was the son of Duncan II of Scotland and Ethelreda, daughter of Gospatric of Northumbria. His date of birth is not known but he is known to have died in 1147. His father was killed in 1094 and he and his mother fled to Northumbria. He married Alice de Rumely in 1137.
