Short Biography

Aethelweard was a younger son of King Alfred the Great and Ealhswith who was born around 880. It is known, from Asser’s biography of Alfred, that Aethelweard was sent away to study with other boys of a similar age. He was able to read and write Latin and he is known to have authored a Latin version of the Anglo Saxon Chronicles.

He was granted numerous estates by his father which made him a wealthy landowner. After the death of King Alfred in 899, Aethelweard supported his brother Edward who became King. He married at some point, though the identity of his wife is not known. They had three children Aelfwine, Aethelwine and Thurcytel

Aethelweard died on 16th October 922 and he was buried at Hyde Abbey, Winchester.
