Short Biography

Burgred became King of Mercia in 852, succeeding Beorhtwulf. Very little is known of his life before this time, including the identity of his parents. As King he wanted to increase control over neighbouring northern Wales and formed an alliance with King Aethelwulf of Wessex.  Burgred married Aethelwulf’s daughter, Aethelswith, as part of the alliance. With Aethelwulf’s support, the northern Welsh, led by Cyngen ap Cadell, were defeated in 853.

In 865 a huge Viking force, known as the Great Heathen Army, invaded Britain. In 874 the Vikings drove Burgred out of Mercia and replaced him with the puppet king Ceowulf.

Burgred and Aethelswith went to Rome where they lived out their lives. Burgred died  in 902.
