Burgred of Mercia d. 902

Burgred became King of Mercia in 852. Very little is known of his life before this time. Once King he wanted to increase control over northern Wales. He made an alliance with King Aethelwulf of Wessex and married his daughter, Aethelswith, as part of the alliance. Burgred was driven out of Mercia by the Vikings who replaced him with the puppet king Ceowulf. He and his wife went to Rome where they lived out their lives. Burgred died  in 902.
