Wulfnoth Cild was the father of Earl Godwin of Wessex and the grandfather of King Harold II (Godwinson). He was a wealthy Sussex landowner and is believed to have owned several properties. In 1008 King Aethelred the Unready built a fleet of ships to protect the coast against Viking attack. Wulfnoth stole twenty of the ships and used them to raid the south coast. This brought him into conflict with King Aethelred. As a punishment he may have had land confiscated. He is believed to have died around 1014.
