Short Biography

King Aethelwulf of Wessex was born around 795 and died 13th January 858. He was the son of King Egbert of Wessex. His mother was possibly Redburga, daughter of Charlemagne of France. Aethelwulf served as Subregulus of Kent before succeeding his father as King of Wessex. He married Osburgh around 830 and they had six sons. After the death of his first wife he went on a pilgrimage to Rome taking his youngest son, Alfred with him. On his return he visited Charles King of the Franks and married the King’s daughter, Judith. He and Judith had no children and on his death he was succeeded by his eldest son, Aethelbald.
