Short Biography
Aethelwold of Wessex was the son of Aethelred of Wessex and his wife, Wulfthryth. His date of birth is not known, but he was quite young when his father died in 871 and considered too young to rule. As a result, the crown passed to Aethelred’s younger brother, Alfred the Great.
Aethelwold spent much of his adult life trying to gain support to take the throne from Alfred and later from his son, Edward the Elder. Aethelwold died in battle in 902.
