Short Biography

Sweyn of Norway, also known as Sweyn Cnutson, was born in 1015. He was the first son of King Canute the Great by his first wife, Aelfgifu of Northampton. Canute became King of England in 1016 following the death of King Edmund Ironside. In 1030 Sweyn and his mother were sent to Norway to rule the country in Canute’s name. They introduced new laws and increased taxation which made them unpopular with the Norwegians and they were driven out of Norway in 1034. Sweyn and Aelfgifu went to Denmark where Sweyn died in 1035.
