Short Biography

Aelfgifu of Northumbria was born in 997, the daughter of King Aethelred the Unready and his first wife, Aelfgifu of York. Following the death of her father in 1016, her brother Edmund became King. Around this time Aelfgifu married Uhtred the Bold of Northumbria, likely in a bid to keep him loyal to the crown as he had previously supported the Danes.

Aelfgifu and Uhtred had a daughter, Edith who later married Maldred, son of King Malcolm II of Scotland. Edmund died in 1016 and Canute took the throne. Although he paid homage to Canute, Uhtred was murdered by the Danes in 1016.

Aelfgifu did not re-marry and died in 1042.
